Your website should build trust, not just look pretty

The other day, I saw someone on Threads say she drove past three perfectly good salons near her house to visit one that was 25 minutes away. Why? Because their website gave her a better "vibe." She trusted them more.

That was it. Not better pricing. Not a recommendation. Just the website.

Honestly? I get it.

We all make these decisions — quietly but constantly — based on the websites we land on. Sometimes it’s subconscious. Sometimes it’s pure gut. Either way, that first impression has already done its job before a single word is read.

Let’s talk about trust, shall we?

You’ve put years into refining your craft. You’re amazing at what you do. But if your website gives off "thrown together during lockdown" energy? That brilliance isn’t coming across.

Here’s what the data says:

  • 94% of first impressions are based on design. Not your genius offer. Not your testimonials. Just how your site looks.

  • 75% of people admit they judge your credibility based on your website design.

  • It takes 50 milliseconds for someone to decide if they trust your site. (Yes, really. Fifty.)

In the time it took you to read that sentence, someone already made their decision.

The trust gap is costing you clients you’ll never even know about

Back to the woman on Threads: she didn’t go to the closest salon. She chose the one that felt better. And she’s not the exception. She’s the rule.

You do it too. When was the last time you booked a service on a janky-looking website that made you second guess everything? Exactly.

What pains me is knowing how many brilliant women-led businesses are losing out — not because they aren’t good at what they do, but because their website doesn’t reflect that.

  • 57% of users won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site.

  • 38% will bounce if the layout is confusing or unattractive.

That gap between how good you actually are and how good your website makes you look? That’s the trust gap. And it’s quietly costing you.

Three ways to start building trust today

You don’t need a complete overhaul to start closing that gap. Here are three small changes that can have a big impact:

1. Put your “As Seen In” logos where people can see them

So many people plaster their Instagram bios with "Featured in Vogue/Forbes/etc" but forget to add that social proof to their site.

Even a tiny mention counts. Pop those logos on your homepage, ideally above the fold. It instantly boosts credibility.

2. Don’t hide your testimonials away

Your testimonials shouldn’t be buried on a dedicated page called "Praise" that no one clicks.

Instead, weave them into your service pages. Place specific client feedback next to the relevant offer. You want those kind words to show up right when someone is hesitating.

3. Be specific about results

"I help clients grow" doesn’t mean anything.

"I helped one client increase their monthly leads by 37% in three months"? Now we’re talking.

Even one strong stat makes a difference. It tells people: I’m not guessing. I’m tracking. I know what works.

Your brilliance deserves better than a mediocre website

You know what’s worse than no website? A website that makes people quietly close the tab and never return.

That salon didn’t just gain one appointment. If they live up to the promise their site made, they’ve got a loyal client for years. All because they closed the trust gap.

And that’s what I help my clients do.

At Kei Digital, I design thoughtful, strategic Squarespace websites for women-led service businesses who are done DIYing and ready to be taken seriously.

Sites that look like you, work like you, and sell for you.

If you want a website that actually earns trust instead of undermining it? That’s literally my thing.
